Parish Environment Group

Food is precious - let’s not waste it. the Great Hunger, when over a million Irish people are estimated to have died from starvation.  Today the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that a third of food in this country is wasted.  That is a lot more than enough to have fed the 1 million famine victims of the 1840s. It is enough to feed the population of greater Dublin every day. Most food wasted is wasted in the home, our homes.  Driving carefully on the roads is accepted as a moral obligation.  In its own way, avoiding wasting food is equally a moral matter for us.  Let’s look more carefully at how much food we buy, how we store and cook it, and what we do with the leftovers. It’s a matter of justice to others and to the natural world on which we all depend
